Stefano Marani

Graduated in Geological Sciences at the Bologna University in 1984, from 1985 works as a free lance Environmental Analyst, both in Italy and in the framework of international cooperation programmes for development, in particular I Latin America and Eastern Europe countries. From 1997 works as a senior consultant to public and private develoment agencies, among the other ERVET (Emilia-Romagna Region), SIPRO (Ferrara Province), FORMEZ (Ministry for Public Administration). He collaborated also with several regional and local governments of different Italian regions on issues dealing with cohesion policies programming and Strctural Funds, with a specific focus on environmental and territorial sustainability. Collaborates presently as a senior expert with the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).

From 1985 to 1997 ha worked for several NGOs as a Project Coordinator, also resident (Perù, Argentina) or as expert of sustainability and environmental management. During the second half of the ’90 he also worked as adviser to industrial enterprises supporting projects of ecodesign of processes and products.

He is a partner e co-founder of SIGN- Sustainability Innovation Governance Network, small consulting company, based on a network of professionals in development policies, based in Rome.

Main sectors of activity and experience are: policies and programmes for sustainable territorial development; local and regional development (also in the framework of international cooperation); project and programme assessment, including environmental and territorial impact evaluation.

Key specializations

  • Programming and management of Structural Funds and Rural Development Funds, in Italy and in other European regions of recent accession or presently accessing the EU.
  • Strategic territorial planning, with special reference to Territorial Capital assessment and the design of sustainable development strategies and policies.
  • Analysis and Enviromental/Territorial Assessment, resource sustainable management, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).
  • Industrial Ecology: projects for the improvement of sustainability of industrial estates and the promotion of Ecoindustrial Parks, waste sustainable management, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Ecodesign.
  • Assessment and evaluation of local and regional development programmes and projects, for territorial competitiveness and of international cooperation (at national and international scale).
